I suspected (and confirmed in the disclaimer) from your post that you were referring to YUI2. I had the displeasure of looking at it when i worked at Yahoo! It is by far the worst library API I've ever seen for any major project. Thankfully, I used YUI3 while in dev beta for most of my term there. Further, I was able to make API suggestions directly to the YUI3 team.

If you look into it, YUI3 has taken a ton of inspiration from jQuery (you seem to refer to it as JQuery throughout your post). YUI2 in contrast seems like a bunch of static utility functions, rather than a cohesive framework. YUI3 widgets are much more robust to work with than in jQuery i'd say, but take that with a grain of salt as I haven't done extensive jQuery widget building. YUI3 still needs work as many things are still painful like iterative over a list of elements.

Anyways, glad to hear about your progress at Amazon :D

Distributed systems also require the consideration of fault tolerance which is a non-issue on a single machine. A distributed system is expected to be functional even if one or more of the machines stop operating or behave erratically or even if one or more links between the machines drop. These are very, very hard problems to solve.

You have at least one reader not listed there. I looked around for a bunch of other SE blogs once I got to Waterloo. You have a lot of things worth reading on here.

Good job

See, this is why I like reading the blogs of my peers. Interesting things get mentioned. This is actually a pretty interesting topic, I really need to get on looking into it sometime. Everything seems to be getting massively distributed nowadays because the web 2.0 world requires so much more power.

I absolutely agree on these points. Electromag has absolutely nothing to do with even the most low level Software Engineering. It's an extremely specialized course that shouldn't be made mandatory for many who are really more interested in high level CS concepts. Sometimes courses along this line make me wonder if I should have gone to CS.
